On Sunday, Look Forward claimed a nail-biting victory in the $100,000 Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita Park. The 3-year-old filly narrowly beat Artisma by a head after a fierce stretch battle, earning 10 valuable points toward qualifying for the prestigious Kentucky Oaks on May 2. The Santa Ynez Stakes, a seven-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies, also awarded points to the top five finishers (10-5-3-2-1).
A Win with Heartfelt Meaning
The victory was especially emotional for Look Forward’s connections. On Nov. 8, Look Forward became the last horse to win under the care of her late trainer, Ben Cecil, who passed away on Nov. 29. Afterward, she moved to trainer Michael McCarthy’s barn. McCarthy, who had previously worked with Cecil as an assistant, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to train the filly.
“I’m just thankful to Paul Reddam for entrusting her to us,” McCarthy said. “Ben and his team did the groundwork. This win means a lot.”
The Race: A Thrilling Battle
Breaking from post 5 in a field of eight, Look Forward was guided by jockey Mario Gutiérrez. She settled behind Silent Law, trained by Bob Baffert, and Practical Dream, trained by Tim Yakteen, as they set a fast early pace.
Coming out of the turn, Look Forward surged ahead but quickly faced a strong challenge from Artisma, ridden by Abel Lezcano. The two battled neck-and-neck in the final stretch, with Look Forward pulling ahead in the last stride. Silent Law finished third, while Howin and A. Z. Wildcat rounded out the top five.
Jockey and Trainer Reflect
Gutiérrez praised Look Forward’s adaptability, noting her progress through various race conditions. “She’s learning and improving each time,” he said. “Once I asked her to race, she knew what to do.”
McCarthy is optimistic about her future. “As winter turns to spring, the Kentucky Oaks becomes a goal,” he said. “She has shown promise in longer distances, and I believe she can continue to develop.”
Race Details and Payouts
The race clocked in at 1:25.42, with early fractions of 22.14, 44.98, and 1:11.46. Look Forward has a record of 3: 2-1-0 and earnings of $132,000 for owner Reddam Racing.
Here are the payouts:
